Maaktabi, an Online Learning Platform for Afghan Girls

Description:

Maaktabi was born from a Hackathon competition, where the theme was the United Nations sustainable development goals. Our team decided to tackle the problem of global education rights, specifically for girls in Afghanistan who are not permitted to enter schools past sixth grade.

When the Taliban took over Afghanistan and began systemically removing women's rights, one way that media fought back was to provide education lessons through the news. Women scientists began teaching experiments, so that girls at home could continue learning in safety.

Our solution was to expand on this concept, by providing discrete, remote learning opportunities for girls. There are many cultural and safety considerations to take in terms of this platform, but for this competition we produced a Minimum Viable Product. From this, we won First Place.

One day, I hope to expand and execute this idea as safely as possible to allow women the opportunity to continue their education in Afghanistan.

My Role:

I produced the idea for this project based on my personal experience, and consulted cultural sensitivity information to the team in the production of our platform. I supported the front-end development of the website, and pitched and presented the idea for competition.
